HYALI

Made with glass shards from the Beirut explosion (04-09-2020), HYALI pendants were created to raise funds to support the victims and the reconstruction efforts. This project was created with the support of Studio Beirut.

Around 5000BC, the first glass was created in what is now Lebanon.Unbent but broken was the fate of glass when catastrophe struck in Beirut on August 4th, 2020, on the eighth second of the eighth minute past six in the evening. 2 consecutive explosions occurred in the port of Beirut resulting in 200 fatalities, 7,000 wounded, and 300,000 displaced people with destroyed homes. Millions of little glass shards broke away from window frames, leaving the city naked and its inhabitants vulnerable. I pendants are made using the glass debris collected from the homes and streets and Beirut with the purpose of indirectly recycling this shattered glass to windows. 100% of every purchase proceeds will go to support the victims of the explosion and the reconstruction of their homes.

HIYALI is a fusion of glass debris, collected from the homes and streets of Beirut, melted together in a way to form one solid united object. The vacuum inside the bag mimics the void that shattered the city, both for remembrance and reclaim. After the scares, the scars, the wounds, the cuts, the injuries, and the trauma, HIYALI stands for hope, unity, and belonging. For HIYALI is ancient greek for glass, and HIYALI is Arabic for “she is mine” HIYALI – she is mine – Beirut is mine.
